Women and addiction

When it comes to addiction, women generally get addicted more quickly than men, and deal with a unique set of problems when trying to get sober. In the U.S., 2.7 million women abuse drugs and alcohol—most of which do not seek treatment, further exacerbating the problem.

Top 4 reasons women do not seek treatment for addiction:

  • Family: Many women do not want to admit they have a problem for fear of separation from their kids and loved ones.
  • Perception: By perceiving drug use as a social activity rather than a problem, many women do not view their drug addiction as an issue.
  • Don’t view addiction as a disease: Many women view addiction as a manifestation of depression or anxiety, and as a result, feel they need to treat the underlying mental issues and not the addiction itself.
  • Embarrassment: Many women are embarrassed by their drug use and view admission of their problem as a sign of failure. As a result, many women are closet users, hiding their addictions from those close to them.
